About This Procedure
Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that removes excess gum tissue, bone, or both to expose more of a tooth's natural structure. It is performed for both restorative and cosmetic reasons. When a tooth is broken below the gumline or does not have enough visible structure to support a crown or filling, functional crown lengthening creates the access your general dentist needs for a successful restoration. Crown lengthening is also important when restorative materials such as crowns, fillings, or other restorations extend too far beneath the gumline and violate the biologic width, which is the natural zone of soft tissue attachment between the bone and the margin of a restoration. When restorative material encroaches on this space, the body responds with chronic inflammation, which over time can lead to progressive bone loss, gum recession, and compromised tooth stability. Crown lengthening re-establishes proper clearance between the restoration margin and the bone, allowing the tissues to heal and maintain a healthy attachment. Aesthetically, crown lengthening can correct a "gummy smile" by revealing more of the natural tooth and creating a balanced, symmetrical gumline. Dr. Yant works closely with your referring dentist to plan the precise amount of tissue adjustment needed for optimal restorative and cosmetic results.
