About This Procedure

Soft tissue grafting is a procedure used to treat gum recession, where the gum tissue has pulled away from the teeth and exposed the root surfaces. Recession can cause tooth sensitivity, increase the risk of root decay, and create an uneven or aged-looking smile. In severe cases, recession can lead to the development of soft tissue abscess and tooth loss. Dr. Yant uses several advanced grafting techniques depending on the location and severity of the recession. At your consultation we will discuss the use of different materials and techniques to address your unique clinical situation. In certain cases, the pinhole surgical technique or other minimally invasive surgical techniques can be used to correct recession defects. The goal is to restore healthy gum coverage, protect the roots, and achieve a natural, even gumline. Soft tissue grafting can also be performed on implants to improve their long-term stability. Early treatment of recession leads to more predictable outcomes, so we encourage patients to seek evaluation as soon as they notice gum changes or increased sensitivity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes gum recession?

Gum recession can be caused by periodontal disease, aggressive brushing, genetics, teeth grinding, tobacco use, or misaligned teeth. Once the gum tissue has receded, it does not grow back on its own and may require grafting to restore.

What does gum graft recovery feel like?

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort for the first few days, manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. A soft food diet is recommended for about two weeks. Most people return to normal activities within a day or two of surgery.

Does insurance cover gum grafting?

Many dental insurance plans cover soft tissue grafting when it is medically necessary to treat gum recession or protect teeth. Yant Perio accepts insurance and will verify your coverage before treatment. For larger cases, we also offer transparent case fee pricing.

Will my gums look normal after a gum graft?

Yes. After full healing (typically 3 to 6 months), the grafted tissue blends naturally with your surrounding gums. Most patients are very satisfied with the cosmetic outcome. The grafted area will be thicker and healthier than before the procedure.
