About This Procedure
When a tooth cannot be saved due to advanced periodontal disease, fracture, or infection, Dr. Yant performs gentle extractions with an emphasis on preserving the surrounding bone and tissue. At the time of extraction, bone grafting material is placed into the socket to prevent the jawbone from collapsing and shrinking. This socket preservation procedure is essential for patients who may want dental implants in the future, as adequate bone volume is critical for implant success. Bone grafting is also recommended at tooth sites where bridges are planned, helping to make the pontic site more cleansable and esthetic. Additionally, when there is root proximity between adjacent teeth, grafting is recommended to prevent bone loss and future tooth loss on neighboring teeth. Ridge augmentation and sinus lift procedures are also available for patients who have already experienced significant bone loss. Dr. Yant uses the latest biomaterials and growth factor protocols to achieve predictable healing and optimal outcomes.
What We Offer
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a bone graft after a tooth extraction?
When a tooth is removed, the surrounding bone begins to shrink. A bone graft placed at the time of extraction preserves the bone volume so that a dental implant or other restoration can be placed later. Without grafting, you may lose too much bone to support future treatment. Additionally when a tooth is removed you may start to lose bone on the teeth next door. Bone grafting is not done just to place a future implant, but to save the teeth you already have.
How painful is a tooth extraction with bone grafting?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the appointment. Afterward, most patients experience mild to moderate soreness for a few days that responds well to over-the-counter pain medication and ice.
How long does it take for a bone graft to heal?
Initial soft tissue healing takes about 1 to 2 weeks. The bone graft itself takes 3 to 6 months to fully integrate and mature. Your periodontist will monitor healing with follow-up appointments and X-rays before proceeding with any implant placement.
